Maine is the largest of the six states that comprise New England. Located in the northeastern region of the United States, it is the easternmost state and shares a border with only one other state, , to the west. To the north are the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec; to the south and east is the Atlantic Ocean. Though physically separated from Massachusetts, it was considered part of that state until granted statehood in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise.

The origin of the state's name is unclear. The original European settlers were from France, and it is possible that Maine refers to the French province of the same name. Others believe Maine is a reference to the mainland given by English settlers living on its many islands. Maine's nickname is the Pine Tree State.

Maine is sparsely populated relative to its size, and is heavily forested. Much of the industrial economy is based on forestry products including lumber and paper. There are shipbuilding facilities along the coast. Commercial fishing is also an important element of the economy.

Maine Location MapMaine's climate is considered humid continental with mild summers and cold winters with significant snowfall. Coastal areas are moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. Remnants of hurricanes can affect the coastal cities on occasion during late summer and early fall.

The US and Canadian governments dispute the border between Maine and New Brunswick in two places: Machias Seal Island and North Rock. These are two of only five border disputes between the two countries (the others being between Washington and British Columbia, Alaska and British Columbia, and Alaska and The Yukon Territory).
